The problem

Firing is a black art run at enormous scale

Turning quarried clay, feldspar, quartz, and kaolin into a tile, a basin, or an insulator is high-temperature materials science disguised as craft. A small drift in body moisture, press force, drying rate, glaze rheology, or the kiln's curve produces warpage, dunting, pinholes, tone shift, or caliber drift, discovered only after the burn, when the batch is already scrap or a downgrade.
